How to Obtain a Bahamian Marriage License

Planning to say “I do” in the Exuma Cays?

You can view or download a Bahamian marriage license application here.
Both you and your partner will need to be in The Bahamas for at least 24 hours before applying for a license at the Registrar General’s office in Nassau. The exception is for guests who arrive via cruise ship – in this case; you’ll need a letter from the Ship’s Purser/Guest Services to confirm you have been in Bahamian waters for 24 hours. Two witnesses aged 18 or older must sign your marriage license, and witnesses can be provided if necessary.

You’ll receive your marriage license the day after you apply, and it’s valid for 90 days. The fee for a marriage license is $120, which includes one certified copy of a marriage certificate.

Can I get married the same day I arrive in The Bahamas?

No, for you to marry, both parties must reside in The Bahamas 24 hours before the date of the marriage application. If you arrive via cruise ship, you’ll be required to obtain a letter from the ship’s purser confirming that you have met the residency period by being in the Bahamian waters for 24 hours.

How do I apply for a marriage license in The Bahamas?

In Nassau Paradise Island, marriage licenses are issued at the office of the Registrar General, located at #50 Shirley Street, Shirley House. Telephone (242) 323-0594/5/6; fax (242) 323-7908. This office is open to the public from Monday to Friday between 9:30 am and 4 pm. The office is closed on weekends and during U.S. and Bahamian Public Holidays*. For applications, follow the links for marriage licenses and marriage certificates.

Can I apply for a marriage license by mail?
No, you cannot. Both parties must be present in The Bahamas at the time of application for a marriage license.

Will my marriage be legal in my resident country?

Many countries now require that official documents, such as international marriage certificates, be certified by the issuing country. In The Bahamas, this means that an Apostille (a special seal) is applied by the relevant authority to certify that a document is a true copy of an original. The Apostille can be made available to you within 30 days of the request. Your Wedding Planner or Marriage Officer will assist you in this regard.

If I am divorced or a widow, can I still get married in The Bahamas?

If I am divorced, can I still get married in The Bahamas?
Yes, but you must present an original final divorce decree or a certified copy with a raised or color seal.

If I am widowed, can I still get married in The Bahamas?
Yes, but you must produce a death certificate for the deceased spouse.

If you prefer, you can also make this declaration in The Bahamas with an attorney-at-law or notary public.
